“Learning empowers people to change for a peaceful and sustainable future”
The 21st century is an age of breakthroughs and an age of breakdowns. (Learning to Know…, Quisumbing, 2008, p. 13) We need to prepare SFC to face this challenging future, where our “Planet is in peril, in an era of rapid change; of contradictions, crises and challenges.” This philosophy is our moral obligation and our answer to the challenge of Education for Sustainable Development.
Peace
Peace is not merely the absence of violence but the presence of respect, tolerance, trust, mutual understanding, cooperation, justice and freedom.
Unity in Diversity
Unity in diversity is appreciative of the richness of diversity in its broadest sense, including race, gender, age, class, religion or culture, difference of ability, education or economic positions and recognizing and understanding the unity underlying it.
Care and Protection of the Environment
We need to adopt behaviors that protect our planet’s natural resources which are essential to our human development and survival.
Empowerment of People
This involves the process of emancipation in which the disadvantaged are empowered to exercise their rights, to obtain access to resources and to participate actively in the process of shaping society and making decisions. Education is key to the empowerment of people working for a sustainable future.
